Almaz

Almaz (Russ. "Алмаз" means "Diamond") was the project name for a series of manned and unmanned space stations that were developed by the Soviet Union during the 1960's and had the objectiv to take high resolution pictures from space. What used to be a military project during the cold war strived the exploration of space and became the base for further projects. Among Saljut and Mir the Russian block of the International Space Station (ISS) is based on the findings of the Almaz project.
